ASUCR for dummies

By Andrew Sotelo

ASUCR is not an evil empire nor some sort of League of Shadows-type organization. However, there are a lot of byzantine rules that one must learn before dealing with them. Here's some advice that will help you navigate the murky waters of ASUCR.

-Make sure you fundraise properly during the year so that you aren't blindsided when a reimbursement requisition comes through. Luckily, CMAC had enough funds from club fees and fundraising to avoid a catastrophe, but if we hadn't...

-Officer's retreats are not covered by ASUCR. We learned this the hard way. On a related note, learn what is and isn't covered in reimbursements by ASUCR before you do your budget for the year. If you want a skewed and messy budget, ignore this advice.

-Have another officer/club member with you whenever you go into the belly of the beast, so that they can share your experience. Derrick will back me up here.

-ASK QUESTIONS when you go in for the budget meeting. You will learn a lot. Don't forget the next piece of advice while you're in there.

-Everything you learn? Write it down, so others can share in your knowledge. See, I do follow my own advice!

This applies to ASUCR, but really, it can apply to almost everything about running a club- or indeed, anything at all!

I'm sorry that I couldn't write anything more exciting for my first post, but I'll see what I can do next time.

A very off-topic aside: The new Broken Social Scene album, "Forgiveness Rock Record" is pretty sweet. Also recommended is the music of Gogol Bordello and if you're into more synth stuff, Jonsi's solo album "Go".

Andrew, over and out.
